Replacing rot at kitchen sink without...

How do you remove the rotted out particle board beneath your taps without having to replace the whole countertop? Anybody know?
Well stick around, cause I'm gonna have to find out.

A plumber I know suggested a solution to my loose taps that follows in the jerrybuilt tradition. He suggested a metal flange type thingy that clamps the faucet to the countertop, and secures it to the portion of the counter that isn't rotted out yet. Stay tuned for pictures of my attempt .:p

Well, never mind the metal flange type thingy, ( I never knew what that was anyway), what I did was :
Remove the sink itself, and the faucet.
With a rotary tool, I cut out a notch around the rotted particle board beneath the thin layer of arbourite where the faucet was.(is that how you spell "arbourite"?)
Using a chisel, I chiselled out the rotted area below the arbourite in the shape of a rectangle.
Leaving the thin layer of arbourite intact, I cut out a piece of plywood to fit in the notched out area.
Below that, I added a longer strip of plywood to span the length of the sink, where it will attach to areas of the particle board that are not rotten.
I placed the short piece on top of the longer piece, and drilled holes through both where the faucets will go.
After screwing the two pieces together, I covered the top shorter piece with gobs of carpenter glue, and clamped the whole assembly in place.
Next I added a few screws to each side of the longer piece, securing it to the particle board underside of the countertop.
Finally, I left it to dry clamped overnight, and once everything was connected and back in place...
I hope to add some photos to this posting when I get the film back.

Hope you can make these out. I've inset a piece of plywood, glued and clamped in place with holes drilled through for the faucet pipes.This is a perfect example of a jerrybuilt fix-it job. Have any you know about?

You can see here how the plywood was inset to replace the rotted out particle board. Surprisingly this worked like a charm.
